Claressa Shields is known for her dominance in the boxing ring, but her latest fight is playing out on social media. The two-time Olympic gold medalist and undisputed boxing champion went on a heated rant about light-skinned women, claiming they are often the ones criticizing her online.

During a livestream, Shields expressed her frustration, saying:

“Why? It’s giving obsessed. It’s giving obsessed. Light skin, red bone—yeah, get your flame-looking ass up out of here. I don’t play with these hoes. It’s mostly a lot of light-skinned women who come bothering me. Yeah, I said what I said.”

She went on to claim that light-skinned women tend to have self-esteem issues and feel threatened by her confidence.

“They be hating on everything. ‘Oh, she just thinks she’s so pretty, but she got a strong jawline.’ Baby, you— I don’t even mean to come at all light-skinned girls for real, but usually, they’re the ones that be inboxing me or who be commenting talking stuff. And I don’t really be liking it.”

Shields made it clear that her issue isn’t about skin tone itself but rather the negative comments she receives.

“I know for sure it ain’t about light-skinned, dark-skinned, white, Black, Mexican, Puerto Rican. I’ll whip a girl’s ass—know that. So when they be talking crazy to me, I be like, man, I ain’t really the one to be playing with.”

She then blocked several critics mid-stream, further fueling the debate.

As expected, Shields’ comments set social media on fire. Some fans agreed with her sentiments, saying that colorism can work both ways and that people often attack confident dark-skinned women. Others, however, criticized her for generalizing light-skinned women, arguing that her comments were divisive.

Whether people agree with her delivery or not, her comments have reignited a discussion about beauty standards, self-esteem, and the ways Black women critique each other.
